The Gospel of Matthew

Adult Bible Study Dec 2011 – Feb 2012

While the Gospel of Matthew may not seem elementary, the early church recognized its usefulness as a basic instruction book on what being a follower of Jesus meant.  A major purpose of this Gospel is instruction for discipleship.

Can there be any doubt that today’s church needs a book like this and needs to give attention to discipleship?  The word “Christian” is bandied about so loosely and applied to so many entities and actions, with some of them having a questionable connection with Jesus.  Too, many people call themselves “Christians,” with little apparent attention to what the word means.  Being Christian is about being a disciple of Jesus, not merely about getting saved, as important as that is.

The intent of this three-month study is not that you learn that you ought to live as Jesus’ disciple, or that it would be good if you were to live as Jesus’ disciple, or that you should be ashamed if you don’t live as Jesus’ disciple.  Rather, the intent is that you learn to actually live as Jesus’ disciple and to participate with our church in focusing on actually doing what Jesus commanded us to do (see Matthew 28:19-20).

Middle School & High School will come to understand what they believe and why.  They also will be able to explain and defend their beliefs about God to those who question them.  The studies help them own their faith and is grounded in 1 Peter 3:15 and the call to "always be prepared to give an anwser to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have."
Children & Preschool will discover they matter to God!  Because every child matters to God.  The Preschool lessons will actively engage each child in the Bible story and lead them to experience God's love and to know Jesus.  The Children will build a lasting faith as the teachers confidently teach the Bible - pure and simple in contemparay and creative ways that will lay God's Word as the foundation for their lives.
